Inspirational Tags for Scrap FX

Hi All
Today I am sharing two inspirational tags.
They have been created with a combination of Scrap FX products
& techniques inspired by Andy Skinner.

The background technique used on my over sized tags is a layering technique
with acrylic paint & drops of 99% alcohol.
The primary colours combine to make a whole kaleidoscope of colours.
The last layer being Titanium white, allowing just peeks of the vibrant colours.

The Modern Girl Stencil contains both the negative & positive images.
Both were used to feature these funky female figures
with dabs & splatters of
black & white acrylic paints.

Perfect inspirational sentiments were used from the Art Phrases Transparency sheet.
Applied with matte gel medium.

Random stamping with the Circles & Squares stamp in Black Archival ink.

The same black ink rubbed around the edge to form a frame
& some rainbow fringed ribbon
are enough to finish these tags off.

Hope these inspire you too!

Paper Rose Mixed Media stamps with Gelli Printing Tutorial

Today I want to share some more Mixed media Gelli printed cards
that I have made using Paper Rose stamps.
I found I had quite a few photos at various stages of the process.
So I have included a step by step tutorial.
This has made a rather long post....Hope you enjoy....

These detailed gelli printed backgrounds pair beautifully with bright bold sentiments
such as these die cuts from Paper Rose.

This bold sentiment stamp from Paper Rose also suits these backgrounds.

The beautiful silhouette sentiments are all that is needed with a few stars thrown in.

MY GELLI PRINTING TUTORIAL:

1. Gather your supplies

Gelli plate
Brayer
Stamps & stencils
Mark making tools like bubble wrap, mesh, die cuts
Pre cut 6 x 6" cardstock
Acrylic paints

I like the thick Gel Press plate best. I have it in a few different sizes.
Really love the Speedball brayer too.
Paper Rose has 3 sets of Mixed Media Stamp sets that I have featured here.
Other items for mark making on the gell plate are bubble wrap, mesh from onion bag,
stencils and die cut shapes from Paper Rose.

I used Dina Wakley heavy body acrylic paints.  Such vibrant colours.

2. Light base layer of acrylic paint.
Apply dots of 2 or 3 light colours directly to gelli plate
and smooth out with the brayer.
Pull prints off plate onto precut white cardstock.
Create more interest by only pulling colour in patches
rather than whole sheet each time.
Second prints can be pulled depending
on how much paint is left on plate.
This is called a ghost print.
Keep applying paint & brayering as required.
Leave some white space too.

3. Do not clean the plate at any stage!

For these first layers I have used combinations
of yellow, pink and olive green.
They blend to make lots of light colours.

4. The brayer can be rubbed off onto other cardstock
or paper between applications of paint to clean it.
These can make more great bases for backgrounds.

5. Build up the middle layers.
Use deeper tones of the base colours
as well as a contrasting colour on the gelli plate.
Brayer the paint onto the plate. Then remove colour & create texture
with stamps, stencils, wrap, or masks,
before pulling parts and pieces onto the base coloured pages.
(as shown above)
I used turquoise and cheddar. Makes blues, greens & orange colours.

6. Contrast Stamping.
More interest can then be given to each card
by repeating the same stamping with distress oxide inks
 in bright contrasting colours.
Do not use a stamp block.
Hold the stamp in your hand & just roll it on the page to leave more organic markings.

7. Water soluble marks.
Use a water soluble pencil to highlight masked areas & to doodle.
Soften shapes with a water brush.

8. Other mark making.
Use white & black acrylic ink to do ascerbic writing
& splatters with a fan bush.

You will end up with a ton of backgrounds that can be used for cards or diecutting.

I trialed all sorts of Paper Rose die cuts with these backgrounds.
Some I have shown on previous posts over the last few months.

Close up of layering details.

Hope this inspires you to give gelli printing a go.
It is really fun & addictive.
Makes spectacular individualized backgrounds
with lots of uses.
Cheers for now,
Deb

Paper Rose Cards featuring Sunray Background Die

Hi There,
Today I want to share these cards I have made featuring the Sunray Background die from Paper Rose.

I think this card is quite stunning made from cardstock
coloured with acrylic paints, stamps & stencils on my Gel Press plate.
The Sunray Background die #17568 has been cut from watercolour cardstock
spritzed with tiny splatters of various colours of paint to match with the background.

The shadow die cut is cut from Tim Holtz kraft core shattered cardstock.
Happy Birthday to you Layered die #17631
& more contrasting papers from gel printing.

The Scalloped edge square die piece of the Sunray Background was used for the next card.

More gel printed backgrounds used.
The black bird silhouette is from the Lots of Birds die set #17748
sitting on a branch stamped in black archival ink from the Christmas Poinsettia stamp set #17790
The Layered sentiment diecuts are interchangeable, all matching each other.

#17448 Happy Layered die.
Day trimmed from Happy Birthday Layered die #16874

This time the Sunray Background die & the Lots of Bird dies were cut out from Kraft cardstock.

A border was left on the bottom to stamp & white heat emboss
the sentiment from the Poppies Clear stamp set #17496

Hope you enjoy these cards.
You can see that really special cards can be made using simple silhouette die cuts
when combined with vibrant coloured & textured papers.

Blooming Flowers Background Cards for Paper Rose

Hi All
Today I want to share three cards I have designed featuring the
Blooming Flowers Background die from Paper Rose.

It is really a gorgeous die cut which can look very different depending on how you use it.

For this first card I die cut a bright gelli printed background
made using acrylic paints & Distress oxide inks.
Stamped with the Mixed Media stamp sets from Paper Rose.
I elevated the die cut on a piece of fun foam on the card front.
It is backed with some teal blue cardstock.
The sentiment is from the Beautiful Mandala stamp set.

For this next card I die cut the Blooming Flowers twice from pre coloured cardstock.
I had used pink mica spray to colour my cardstock & then splattered with various other colours.

I trimmed off the border edge of the die so the foliage pieces form the edges.
The result looks like a complete flower in the centre.

I attached these two halves with matte medium just in the central areas so the edges lift off the page.
The background card base was made by splattering a sheet of heavy watercolour paper
with warm coloured distress inks.  Yellow through to Red tones.
The Congratulations Layered diecut covered the joining of the two diecut pieces.

My final card was made as a pop up card for Mother's Day.
The front of the card features the Blooming Flowers Background die
angled over the largest Banner 2 diecut cut from textured card.

Gelli printed card was used for the diecut then heat embossed
with Geranium Coral Blush embossing powder from Lindys Stamp Gang.
The varied colours of the background show through the embossing.

The Large Dainty Butterfly die was used repeatedly on the cover & inside of the card
repeating the various choices of cardstock used & embossing on the card.

The Madison Lace die added extra detail to the inside of the card.
The Vintage Letter stamp was used to add subtle texture to the inside of the card.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.
Hope this gives you some ideas to use your die cuts in different ways.

MOONFACE for SCRAP FX

When I saw this Moon face stencil from Scrap FX
I knew I had to feature it with this funny photo of my husband.
It  cracks me up just remembering that day.
The whole family laughed so hard.

Jill Wheeler sends such nice thick A4 chipboard packaging with our goodies from Scrap FX.
I had to use one as a base for this creation once I laid down a coat of white gesso.
I sprayed the background with watery drips of Distress oxide, Fired Brick,
Fossilized Amber & Iced Spruce.
I lightened the background with Antique Linen & the  Lineage Stamp.
Texture was then applied by inking embossing folders
& stamping with these over the surface.
Geometric stencil & Code background stamp created more layers with
Pumice stone, Seedless preserves & Chipped sapphire Distress oxide inks.

The Moonface stencil was applied with Black soot, Seedless Preserves &
Chipped Sapphire distress oxide inks.

Splatters of water added a blended oxidized effect.

The molecules transparency repeated these patterns from the background.
Brushed Pewter distress stain was applied to the chipboard pieces,
'Outta this world' & 'Molecules'.

Splatters of silver & black inks.
The sentiment printed from my computer
as well as some handwriting
complete this piece.

Hope it brings a smile to your 'moon face' too!

Own Kind of Beautiful Retro Tag

This Retro Style Tag came together from a happy accident.

I cut the oversized tag from recycled thick white card
following the dimensions of a size 10 tag in my stash.
But made this one larger.  Measuring 12 cm x 23 cm

I gave the tag two coats of white gesso to basecoat,
followed by a layer of yellow acrylic paint 50:50 mixed with water.
It was so bright I immediately rubbed the surface back with a moist baby wipe
to soften the effect rubbing most of the colour away.
Light modelling paste was applied through a Tim Holtz Bubble stencil
randomly in three places.

I then lightly rubbed the surface with Distress Paint Dabbers in
Peeled Paint, Weathered Wood, & Vintage Photo.
concentrating mostly over the stencilled areas.

Distress Crayons were also applied & blended
with a moist finger tip to add more shadow & dimension.
Colours used were Stormy Sky, Iced Spruce, Vintage Photo & Peacock Feathers.

I then experimented with the arrangement of various Paper Rose diecuts,
stamps & the focal point for my design.

Random stamping with the same Mixed media stamp set & Vintage Letter Stamp set
using Cobalt & Vintage Sepia Archival Inks gave more texture to the background.

The Circles and Rings I had previously punched from watercolour paper
coloured with Mermaid Lagoon & Wild Honey Distress Spray/Oxide inks
& white heat embossed using the Mixed Media & Vintage Letter Stamps sets.

The rest of the layers came together from Paper Rose Die Cut pieces in my stash like the
Madison Lace die used on the bottom, the Leaf 1 & Layered Circlet 1 dies.

The sentiment stamp is from the Beautiful Mandala stamp set using Black Archival Ink,
& the 'happy' is from the Poppies stamp set.

Love this Tim Holtz Photo Booth picture.
Retro horn rim glasses remind me of the 60's.
I tore a Tim Holtz Sizzix film strip die cut into pieces to frame the photo.
Layers blended by shading with Aquarelle pencil & waterbrush
as well as more Peacock Feathers Distress Crayon.

White Ink Splatters & a black eyelet inserted to complete this tag.
This tag makes me smile as it reminds me of my MUM
& photos of her in this era.

Hope you enjoy my take on a Retro Tag too.
Cheers for now,   Deb
