Monoprinted Layering Stencil Cards

Hi There Readers,

I was recently inspired by some cards shared by Stacy Zimmerman Hutchinson 

from Tattered Nest Designs who (if you don't already know!)

is part of the Tim Holtz Creative Team.

She shared a technique that is really cool! Mono printing with Layering Stencils.

This technique produced so many backgrounds I was able to create lots of cards.

The spray ink colours I used were the same: Fossilized Amber, Salvaged Patina & Seedless Preserves.

This is a colour combo I would not have thought of, but it works so well.

I used an AaLL & create stencil that is half butterfly & half floral 

as I don't own the Doodle stencil used by Stacey.  Any detailed stencil will do.

After making lots of backgrounds, I added white heat embossed text in random areas & machine stitching.

Extra background pages were used to die cut insects & florals from the funky sets by Tim Holtz & Sizzix.  Funky Florals Large & Funky Insects Thinlits dies. 

These colours pair so well with kraft & white cardstocks. 

I played around with backgrounds & foregrounds die cut from the Sizzix Mixed Media die sets, 

the Paper Cut Bird die & the Funky Wreath die.

Various sentiment & word dies were then chosen & cut from any cardstock scraps.

Layering the sentiments makes them stand out from the backgrounds.

Each card is all about the layers. Vintage buttons are the only other embellishments.

Hope this gives you some ideas for card creations too.

Today I am sharing a set of three cards that came about from my idea of creating a geode style card,  incorporating lots of shiny, glittering layers.

As soon as the Splat Nesting Die was released by Paper Rose 

I knew it would be perfect for my design idea. 

Amethyst is my birthstone so i was inspired to firstly create in purples, accented with silver & gold.

The Gold Cardstock & the Sentiments i used are also from Paper Rose.

Combining this die with embossing powders & glitters from WOW!

         created the sparkling, metallic effect i wanted to achieve.

The embossing pen was applied randomly to the golden die cuts & their edges.

Tracing of the die cuts with the embossing pen on the corners of the card created 

more organic patterns before heat embossing.  

Metallic Brass embossing powder was applied & melted creating an extra golden texture.

The Glitters of Pearl Gold, Pumpkin Spice & Celebration Sparkles were applied 

with liquid glue to provide extra crystalline bling!

The watercoloured backgrounds were created with twinkling h20's 

& lindy's stamp gang colours before die cutting & layering.

The last card i created was inspired by the more natural colours of 'thunder eggs' 

& agates that are found in australia.

These cards were so much fun to make i couldn't stop at one.

So fun to find such appropriate sentiments.

KOOKA NOTES CARD & BONUS WALL HANGING

 Hi Readers,

Today I wanted to share my Australian themed card featuring 

the Kookaburra Builder die from Paper Rose.

The creation of this card came together almost as a happy accident,

as I was die cutting shapes from packaging 

that I had precoloured with mica, distress & distress oxide sprays.

I always have a heap of this precoloured cardboard on hand.

I love the textures that occur on the different packaging as the sprays dry naturally.

I cut the various pieces of the Kookaburra from various colours.

I attached the pieces together with Distress collage medium.

It was easy & lots of fun to put together.

I added extra layers of black to form shadows & extra pieces on the crest & tail.

I diecut the centre of the 6 x 6" background card with the Stitched Peekaboo circle die.

The Layered Foliage Windows die formed the greenery within the circle. 

I used both the positive & negative parts of these die cuts.

I think that adds extra interest & depth to the background.

The Layered Just a Note die was also cut from similar cardstock,

& popped up for the Kooka to perch on.

Mounted with layers of cardstock & kraft card.

I loved making this card.  It turned out just as I imagined with lots of colourful texture.

I forgot to take progress photos as I was creating,

 so I also made a 2nd project using similar papers 

& theme to make a wall hanging on an oversized kraft tag.

The background oversized kraft tag was first smeared with gold embossing paste, 

then swiped with white crackle paste & left to dry.

Various matte sprays were applied to the paste highlighting the beautiful crazing.

The Scribble Circle die was applied to the background,

then layers of Eucalyptus leaves for Kooka to perch on.

These dies are the Stitched Eucalyptus branch, the Tall Eucalyptus Branch, the Eucalyptus Branch & the Gum Leaves 1 

Here is a sneak peek of the mess of coloured cardstock on my craft table.

Hope this gives you some creative inspiration to build yourself 

a Kookaburra or two, too!!

ENCAUSTIC WAX CANVASES

Hi there,

Today I am showcasing some new Scrap FX products with an ancient art technique. (But new to me!)

I created two artistic collages on canvas.    One is dark & grungy, as aged as the images I chose.

The other is bright & visually textured.

Both are amazing, 

as the encaustic wax technique allows the formation of so many layers 

that blend & become suspended in the wax.

Every layer is still visible as the printed rice & tissue paper becomes transparent.

The colours in the collage paper darken & the images become more pronounced.

 Even transparencies & chipboard have been immersed in the wax.   No glue required!

Art Pastels, Finnabair Matte Waxes also applied between the layers

to define the images, the chipboard & scratch marks.

I was inspired by Kasia Avery of Everything Art.

I followed the advice from the tutorial & purchased encaustic ground (gesso) & encaustic medium (bees wax & resin combined)

& a hake (natural fibre) brush.  I really enjoyed this technique so will definitely be repeating this process again & again.

Looking at all those collage papers in a different way now.  Want them all!!

Psychedelic 70's Layout

Hi There,

Today I am sharing a layout in tribute to the Psychedelic 70's, 

full of groovy fun & love of colour

for the Scrap FX Design Team.

It all started out just playing around with colouring circles of acrylic paint

 on some scrap kraft paper.

I continued the circular theme with various circular stamps & stencils.

These were the Crazy circles stamp, Round & round stamp, & the Circle collage stamps

Scrap FX has the perfect Transparencies & Chip boards to suit this theme.

Love these fonts & designs.

Ended up recreating the same patterns in layers.

The white background is decorated with the Flourish Window stencil

 just outlined in black posca pen.

The next layer is the colourful painted & stamped layer.

The final layer is a repeat of the painted, stamped layer that has been overlaid with stencils

& darkened with Dina Wakley acrylic paint in night

.

The chipboard sentiment was painted with Flourescent acrylic paint

& topped with a layer of glossy accents to make it 'pop'.

The Hippie Power Transparency was used to highlight the circles.

& I had the perfect photo from my Daughter's School Days to display.
