ENCAUSTIC WAX CANVASES

Hi there,

Today I am showcasing some new Scrap FX products with an ancient art technique. (But new to me!)

I created two artistic collages on canvas.    One is dark & grungy, as aged as the images I chose.

The other is bright & visually textured.

Both are amazing, 

as the encaustic wax technique allows the formation of so many layers 

that blend & become suspended in the wax.

Every layer is still visible as the printed rice & tissue paper becomes transparent.

The colours in the collage paper darken & the images become more pronounced.

 Even transparencies & chipboard have been immersed in the wax.   No glue required!

Art Pastels, Finnabair Matte Waxes also applied between the layers

to define the images, the chipboard & scratch marks.

I was inspired by Kasia Avery of Everything Art.

I followed the advice from the tutorial & purchased encaustic ground (gesso) & encaustic medium (bees wax & resin combined)

& a hake (natural fibre) brush.  I really enjoyed this technique so will definitely be repeating this process again & again.

Looking at all those collage papers in a different way now.  Want them all!!

Psychedelic 70's Layout

Hi There,

Today I am sharing a layout in tribute to the Psychedelic 70's, 

full of groovy fun & love of colour

for the Scrap FX Design Team.

It all started out just playing around with colouring circles of acrylic paint

 on some scrap kraft paper.

I continued the circular theme with various circular stamps & stencils.

These were the Crazy circles stamp, Round & round stamp, & the Circle collage stamps

Scrap FX has the perfect Transparencies & Chip boards to suit this theme.

Love these fonts & designs.

Ended up recreating the same patterns in layers.

The white background is decorated with the Flourish Window stencil

 just outlined in black posca pen.

The next layer is the colourful painted & stamped layer.

The final layer is a repeat of the painted, stamped layer that has been overlaid with stencils

& darkened with Dina Wakley acrylic paint in night

.

The chipboard sentiment was painted with Flourescent acrylic paint

& topped with a layer of glossy accents to make it 'pop'.

The Hippie Power Transparency was used to highlight the circles.

& I had the perfect photo from my Daughter's School Days to display.

Amazing Gears & Circuit Card

Hi Readers,

Today I am sharing a card I created with a masculine, rusty vibe.

To make the card a bit more special I created it oversized 8x4" & in a trifold style.

To achieve the rusty background I used an orange sheet of metallic kraft cardstock 

from the Tim Holtz 8x8" Metallic Jewels paper pack. 

I applied a very thin coat of clear gesso with a palette knife over the whole surface.

Once dry, I applied clear crackle paste randomly, thicker in some areas. 

The reason I applied the clear gesso first was to ensure the crackle layer 

would adhere properly & not just flake off.

I left the crackle to dry naturally.  Walk away for a few hours to let the cracks develop.

Drips of alcohol ink were then applied & spread by gently tapping with a felt applicator.

In some places the alcohol lifted the orange layer right off,

letting the silver base metallic cardstock show through.

I quite liked this distressed effect.  The cracks were well highlighted by the black ink.

The rest of the rust coloured page was used to die cut all the cogs, 

with the Paper Rose Cogs Die.

Even an offcut strip was used as a piece of trim.

I loved the rusty page so much I simply mounted it on heavy weight black cardstock

& layered the cogs, circuit & sentiment 

to allow the rusty finish to be the main feature.

The Paper Rose Circuit Die was cut from a piece of chalkboard black cardstock.

What an amazing die cut! So intricate and perfect contrast for under the sentiment.

I chose the sentiment from the Black & White Sentiment sheet set, 

& applied it over the layers of cogs & circuit texture.

Extra cogs were added to the trifold page.

White cardstock applied to the centre of the card for a written sentiment to be added.

 

It is fun to experiment to see what finishes you can achieve with the products in your stash.

Hope this inspires you to attempt a cracked, rusty finish too.

OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE JOURNAL PAGE

Hi, Today I am sharing a project I created for Paper Rose Design Team

that started out as a 6 x 6" card but instead has become a feature on an Art Journal page.

I started by stamping & clear heat embossing the whole range of cacti stamps from the Paper Rose Cactus Greetings stamp set with Archival ink on water colour paper.

I then coloured the cacti & pots with a water brush pen & Distress inks.

Adding shading & the 'speck' stamp from the Arty Love Create words stamp set

gave more depth & texture to the images.

I then used the coordinating dies to cut the images out.

 I chose some Gelli printed papers in Terracotta tones to form the background of the card.

I die cut a window with the Geometric Border die from a 6 x 6" background.

I backed this with a more colourful print.

 Raising it with foam tape to show off the contrast & shadow of the geometric pattern.

I arranged the little pots across the card also raising some with foam dots.

The sentiment is from the Paper Rose A5 black & white sentiment sheet.

Faux stitching & highlights were added with black & white posca pens.

I decided to keep the card as an inspiration page in my Dina Wakley Journal.

I chose a hessian & rag watercolour paper spread to work on.

I used Dina Wakley spray acrylic paints through the Arty Love Mark making stencil 

to add lovely bright colours & patterns across both pages.

Black Texture paste was then applied in random areas through the Waves Stencil.

Other mark making done with Posca Pens.

The card was attached to the hessian page with foam tape.

The pages turned out really colourful & textured.

Hope you like my idea of keeping a favourite card to turn into an artwork full of inspiration.

Wall hanging for a Friend

Hi There,

Today I am sharing a sweet wall hanging I have created for the Paper Rose Design Team.

I started with a base of chipboard which I cut out in a banner shape with my scroll saw 

& drilled some holes for hanging.

I applied a sheet of specialty paper in pink tones 

from the Dream in Pastel Paper Pack with Matte gel medium. 

Sanding around the edges made it blend to the base shape perfectly.

The Madison Lace die cut from the same paper was applied to the top of the banner in the same way.

Adhesive hessian sheet was cut slightly larger in the same tag shape & applied.

White crackle paste was applied randomly in areas & left to dry naturally.

 A layered mask stamping technique was used to stamp the patterns 

on the largest stitched banner from the Banner 2 die set.

Cut from light blue tones of the Dream in Pastel Paper Pack.

I planned out the placement of the stamps on the banner before I began.

Seeing where the images would overlap.

I stamped the main focal images of the birds & bow on acetate first in Archival Ink

then cut these out to make masks for later use.

I worked from foreground to background by stamping the main focal images first.

I then used the masks I made previously to protect these images 

while I stamped the flowers & the text.  

This layering makes these other images recede into the background.

I used various Archival Ink colours for the different layers like the text & flower centres.

I then coloured the stamped images with the subtle application of Jane Davenport Pastels 

applied with a fine brush applicator.  Love the translucent affect.

I lifted this stamped layer to just sit up from the hessian surface.  

Finishing off with Prima Denim Rosettes, leaves & ribbon.

Fabric covered wire, shaped into a hanger, swipes of white gesso & a rub of vintage photo distress ink over the crackle edges complete this project.

using these beautiful stamps from Paper Rose.
